What’s holding you back with your fitness?

This March we’ll be exploring how your mental state can help you to make progress with your fitness and keep you motivated. All too often we focus on our physical wellbeing – how we look and how our bodies feel – but don’t consider how our minds can help us to become strong in our bodies.

This week we’re looking at what’s holding you back with your fitness, focusing on how your mindset can help power your physical progress.

We speak to a lot of people when they join our Bootcamp sessions and the three biggest issues we hear are:

1. Fear is holding people back. We’d encourage these people to face their fears as that’s how you conquer them. Don’t just dismiss them, face them and work out how you’re going to overcome them.

2. Lack of self-belief. You’ve got to believe in the possibilities and understand that tomorrow can be better than today. This can be hard as it’s not something that can be learnt but it’s definitely doable.

3. Lack of prioritisation. Remember that your well-being is an investment for the long term and it’s worth spending time and energy on.

But how do you move forward? What can you do to overcome those fears?

Make a decision – Most people don’t have the guts to make the tough decisions because they want to make the right decisions, so instead they avoid the issue and make no decision. Don’t be that person. Take some time to think about it and use Tony Robbins’ OOC/EMR decision-making process to help make things easier. Pick a goal you want to achieve and ask yourself “Which mindset do I need to achieve this goal?” and “Which mindset do people have that were successful at this goal?”. Take that mindset and own it.

Surround yourself with people that match your desired mindset & connect with others – to become a runner, begin to hang out with runners, do a Park Run and buy some kit that makes you feel like you’re part of it. That way you eliminate any impostor syndrome and become what you want to be.

Create new habits to support your mindset change. It is easier to adopt a new mindset when you see that it is already working for other people. Learn how they think and adapt their daily habits to match their mindset and success.

Jump out of your comfort zone. If you put yourself in situations that challenge you, you have no other choice than to rise to the occasion and upgrade your mindset. It becomes a necessity to survive. And you won’t just survive – we’re sure you’ll make some amazing progress.
