Strength training sessions in Canada Water
Bootcamp SE16 runs dedicated strength sessions at Stave Hill in Canada Water, built around lifting well rather than lifting heavy for its own sake. They are coached, they are outdoors, and they are aimed at the strength you actually use: getting up, carrying, pushing, pulling and staying steady on your feet.
Plenty of people arrive assuming strength training is for gym regulars, or that it will leave them bulky, or that they need to know what they are doing first. None of that holds. The whole point of a coached session is that somebody else has already worked out the plan, the loads and the progressions, and stands next to you while you learn the movement.
Why strength work is worth your time
Cardio is easy to justify and easy to start. Strength is the one people skip, and it is the one that tends to matter most as the years go on. Working against resistance is generally associated with:
- Maintaining lean muscle, which we all lose gradually from around our thirties unless we do something about it.
- Loading bones and joints, which is part of keeping them strong.
- Better posture, particularly for people who spend the day at a desk.
- Steadier balance and more confident movement on uneven ground and stairs.
- Supporting metabolism, because muscle is expensive tissue to keep.
None of that requires a barbell in a basement. It requires progressive, well-coached resistance work done regularly, which is exactly what these sessions are.
How the sessions are put together
Each strength session is built on compound movements, the ones that use several joints and a lot of muscle at once. Squats and step-ups for the legs. Presses and rows for the upper body. Hinges and carries for the back of the body. Anti-rotation and bracing work for the middle.
Across a week the sessions rotate through upper body, lower body and full body emphasis, so nothing gets neglected and nothing gets battered. Kettlebells, dumbbells, resistance bands, TRX straps and tyres cover the loading, and the hill and the steps handle the rest.
Everything is scaled. If a goblet squat is not right for your knees today, you get a box squat. If the press is heavy, the load comes down and the technique gets the attention instead. A first-timer and a member of eight years can train in the same session.
Training is always better together. Most strength blocks are set up in pairs or small teams, so you work, you rest while your partner works, and you both push a little harder than you would alone.
Outdoors, with weights
Lifting in a park sounds improbable until you have done it. There is no queue for a rack and no mirror. You are on the paths and grass of Stave Hill Ecological Park with the Canary Wharf skyline over the trees, and the coach can see everyone at once.
The ground adds something too. Standing and lifting on turf rather than rubber flooring means your feet and hips work slightly harder to hold position, which is closer to how you use strength in Rotherhithe and Surrey Quays than any machine is.
Getting started
Strength sessions run alongside the regular bootcamp slots through the week: mornings, evenings and weekends. Times move occasionally, so check the timetable or send a message and we will tell you what is on this week. Sessions are from £9 once you join and most people start with the Trial Experience.
Bring trainers with a reasonably flat sole, water, and layers. You do not need to have lifted anything before. Book a call first, then tell the coach it is your first strength session, and they will take it from there.
